Women in action movies are predominantly dressed like idiots. That is simply the truth that cannot be denied. Whether it’s in a superhero movie or a standard action film, women are constantly dressed in ridiculous, hindering ways. Whilst their male counterparts don proper footwear, full coverage clothing, and hair that is kept out of their face one way or the other, the ladies look like they are off to a club or lunch at a cafe.
It essentially comes down to the apparent fact that men are attractive when they look ready for anything. Their clothing is easy to move in, they often have an extra shirt they can whip off to cover a wound, and they appear already prepared for the world to end before it does. Think Indiana Jones or Captain America. For our viewing pleasure as well, the clothes fit just tight enough that you can see the obligatory outline of their enormous arms. Women on the other hand are apparently only attractive when half their small amount of cleavage is out, their hair is down and flying in the wind, and they’re clothed in something form fitting but made of very restrictive fabric. Mind you this fabric fails to cover the important things like their abdomen, most of their chest, shoulders, arms, and, sometimes, legs. Wonder Woman is a perfect example of absurd bodily protection. To top that off, they are constantly put in shoes with a high heel or narrow wedge.
As someone who works solely on their feet, the concept of being in three inch heels or balancing on wedges, essentially decreasing the width of my sole by half, is an absolute nightmare. Also, as someone who has been active the majority of their life with hair that reaches my waist, there is no way I would last four seconds in a heated battle. Neither should these yahoos in these films. They would be choking on their hair, or someone would have yanked on it to deter them. The second they run on uneven terrain, which is most of the time in these things, they would faceplant numerous times due to their stupid decision in footwear.
I know this is not the fault of the actors, and oftentimes these movies are based off of something else where there is already an established character design. Another thing, I am not saying that this is the case with every action filled movie. I have my quarrel with the John Wick and James Bond films acting like suits are logical attire for killing fools. I also appreciate that heroes like Shuri, Okoye, and Captain Marvel have flat soled boots and keep their hair out of their face for the most part. It just irks me to my core that most lasses in these types of films are dressed more for their feminine aspects and less for what their character actually does for a living. It almost seems like women can’t be attractive without showing off what makes them look womanly instead of wearing something suitable for the chaos they endure in the span of two hours. It’s a damning message to send to youths who aspire to be like these people but feel as though they can’t because they dress more like the male counterparts than they do the women they look up to.
The movie industry should get their bravery on and dress the women in action films the same way they dress the men. In a way that corresponds to the occupation of the character. In a way that makes sense in the situation they end up in. It's a troubling thing to do to young audiences, making the only ladies they can aspire to be only worthy, seemingly, if they are sultry or provocative. It makes the many of us who don’t fancy looking like that feel unattractive and unfeminine. It is such a simple fix that would have a massive impact. Women should be portrayed more than just breasts and asses. Even if a strong female character comes into play, when they are dressed to showcase the common characteristics of a woman, it overshadows the good intentions of that character being equal to her male co-stars.
To note, this is solely aimed at women in action-filled movies. I’m not saying that anytime a woman shows cleavage in any film ever is a sin. I only want to point out that the costume design for this specific genre is, more than not, insulting. Just look at pictures of people serving in the military- everyone has the same, practical uniform. That is all I want from these movies. The sameness in practicality.

Hi Halle, here is a link to help you with you rage. Being an artist yourself, you should contribute something. All you need to do is find a gratuitously sexualized female super hero and then redraw the scene with Hawkeye instead. https://thehawkeyeinitiative.tumblr.com/
